Detailed History of Ulrich Braun

May 6 1902
Ulrich arrived in Blackwater, New Alexandria on May 6th 1902 alongside a new friend, Lucina Knox, who Ulrich met on the boat from Australia. After a brief exploration around Blackwater and some shopping at the general store, where Ulrich accidentally purchased five large backpacks due to a language barrier. Lucina and Ulrich decided to walk to Strawberry, hoping to find someone that could give them some advice. After waiting for a train outside of Strawberry for a while, the two decided to walk along the rails to Saint Denis, the largest mark on the map. Outside of Rhodes, after many hours of walking, Lucina and Ulrich met Imogene Harrison - who kindly escorted them to Saint Denis, teaching them how to operate the banking system in New Alexandria and graciously giving Lucina and Ulrich some money to help start their journey. She also shot a snake outside of Saint Denis. 

May 7 1902
Ulrich and Lucina set out from Saint Denis to Braithwaite Manor, where they were informed they could pick apples for a decent profit. On their journey they met Connor "Goggles" Osborne, who graciously gifted Ulrich a revolver which would come in handy later in their journeys. Lucina and Ulrich started their job picking apples for 20c an apple until they eventually would be making upward of 30c an apple. Ulrich would also pool his money with Lucina to buy Rhodes, his first horse, for a mere $60 at Rhodes. Ulrich and Lucina would use Rhodes to travel around the countryside, looking for the perfect horse for Lucina later that week.

May 10 1902
Lucina and Ulrich would go to Valentine for the first time on May 10, 1902. While in Valentine, Ulrich would almost get run over by a small French midget named Colette and her comically oversized passenger, Orchid - who was introduced originally as 'Pumpkin' and 'Weightyrock'. Ulrich, Lucina, Colette and Orchid would spend some time together, getting to know one another and forming the start of a beautiful friendship. Additionally; Caspar and Isaac would appear before Rachel at the telegram office. The group set off to go cliff jumping not far from valentine, before going bear hunting. Luce went cunt up when a bear decided it had it out for her, flashing everyone in the process. Luce was not seen wearing a dress while riding a horse from that point forward for quite some time.

May 11 1902
Lucina and Ulrich would meet Colette in Valentine to pick out a cold weather outfit in order to join Colette in a trip up to Coulter - a village in the snowy mountains - where they would go white water rapid rafting in canoes. Ulrich would meet Colette's friend Andy Pink, a handsome cowboy who made Ulrich feel very comfortable. Ulrich would take up smoking cigarettes as a result of their conversations outside the general store. Ulrich and Lucina would continue with Colette up to Coulter to go rafting. Colette described this activity as fun and only mildly dangerous. All three would continue canoeing down the river, down waterfalls and hitting all sorts of rocks. Ulrich comically exclaimed "I flew out the bloody boat!" which would later become one of Colette's favourite one-liners. Ulrich would unfortunately be impaled on a railroad bridge, requiring medical attention at Valentine. 

May 12 1902
Lucina and Ulrich would spend time with Orchid, learning self defense and assisting him picking wheat and apples. Orchid would tell Ulrich and Lucina many stories, including one where he recalls breaking Colette's table and chairs when injured. Ulrich would grow to appreciate Orchid even more, valuing him as a close friend. Isaac would also take Ulrich and Lucina out to teach Ulrich the basics of hunting, to which Ulrich responded very quickly, getting his first few perfect pelts. Ulrich was very grateful for this new experience, thanking Isaac in person and with a telegram later.

May 13 1902
Lucina and Ulrich would meet Colette and Andy in Valentine, agreeing to escort Colette back to her home in Annesburg. They discovered that Colette's house had been broken into some time recently. Andy would lose a dice game resulting in him being tasked with hunting an animal without his shirt on, as he rolled a 1. Ulrich and Andy climbed up the mountain of rocks behind Colette's house and would share cigarettes and conversation overlooking the views of waterfalls and forests. The group would continue to Emerald Ranch, where they would rent buggies and race to Blackwater. Ulrich caused both himself and Andy to fly off the horse and buggy, flying down a cliff. He was quite embarassed to do so badly in front of Andy. Once they reached Blackwater, Andy went to sleep but not before giving Ulrich a hug, causing Ulrich to feel some strange emotions.

May 14 1902
Colette, Lucina and Ulrich would go hunting on May 14th for pig fat. Unfortunately their trip was cut short when they were ambushed by wolves on horseback. Ulrich managed to kill 3 of them, sustaining minimal injuries from the wolf attacks, however, Colette was badly injured and rushed on horseback to the medic tents in Blackwater. The next few hours were spent fixing Colette up with the help of a deputy named Anthony and Dr. Malachi Pike. Colette was escorted to her home by Ulrich and Lucina while singing sea shantys.

May 15 1902
Ulrich would attend a fundraising event for the Blackwater Hospital with Lucina, where he would meet Robert and cross paths again with Imogene and Goggles. Ulrich won several vials of horse medicine in a dice roll game and would almost win the winners round of the dice roll game, losing out to Carlos Barletti - Goggles' boss. The event was a success, raising over $4000 for the new hospital in Blackwater. Ulrich would go away on a 5 day long camping and hunting trip where he would be unreachable. This trip gave himself plenty of time to think about the new feelings he was having. He thought about Andy a lot on this journey.

May 20 1902
Returning from his camping trip, Ulrich would make contact with Lucina and meet up with her and her cousin, Orin Swan, who had recently arrived in state. The three would also meet with Rush and Manny in Valentine, where they would continue on to hold a stake out at Colette's house to try and catch the intruders that continue to break in and trash the place. Ulrich would appreciate getting to know the new friends, drinking whiskey and enjoying the view he last remembered seeing with Andy. Later that day, Orin and Luce would join Ulrich and Isaac on a mining expedition on Mount Hagen. Unfortunately, Isaac's banter with Luce was starting to escalate to the point where Luce was obviously uncomfortable with his hurtful comments. That evening Orin was escorted to the doctor's office after being repeatedly kicked by his horse, where Isaac would choke Luce out. Ulrich felt the need to step in and defend Luce when Isaac would later, in front of Luce's friends, insult her intelligence and claim she had said things that she hadn't. Isaac would call out Ulrich, trying to incite violence in the face of being confronted for his shitty attitude. Ulrich would leave, not entertaining the childish behaviour. He was later told by Orin that both Orin and Orchid (who was present) agreed that Isaac had gone too far. 

May 21 1902
Ulrich would meet Orin and Lucina in Blackwater, participating in a few rounds of Blackjack before travelling around looking for Isaac. Ulrich apologised for the escalation in a telegram, informing Isaac that he merely wants everyone to get along and urged Isaac to be more mindful of Luce's sensitive nature. Isaac did not react well to this telegram, instead accusing Ulrich of spitting in his face. Lucina and Ulrich would eventually meet up with Colette, who was able to track down Isaac. Lucina and Isaac would talk, as Colette would discover that Ulrich has feelings for Andy when Ulrich was unable to refrain from blushing as he was mentioned. Colette encouraged Ulrich to pursue his feelings, however, feeling prematurely outed, Ulrich began to shut down in a panic. Colette and Isaac would go hunting with Lucina while Ulrich went on his own way, managing to have a civil conversation with Isaac and explaining his side of the story before setting off. It seems Isaac and Ulrich may just need time before they can repair their relationship. Ulrich would go on to learn shortly after that Andy had rejected his proposal to accompany him to the cabaret, citing scheduling conflicts. Ulrich apologised to Andy via telegrams for making things awkward.

Ulrich would venture up to the mountains to find Orchid, who had previously said he would be in the area. Instead, Ulrich found a traveller passed out on the lake from a wolf attack. Ulrich would escort the patient to Coulter, where he was fixed up by Ulrich - his injuries fairly basic. Ulrich would return to Valentine to find Caspar, Lucina, Isaac and Colette. Ulrich would ask Colette to forget what he had said to her earlier, stating his intention to shut out his feelings after the rejected cabaret proposal.

May 23 1902
Ulrich would meet up with Lucina, Colette, Caspar and Ash Conan - a well known and respected Judge from Saint Denis. Ulrich heard stories of the cabaret, where Ash had met the two, noting a particular string of energy from Lucina. Ulrich realised quickly that Lucina may have a crush on Ash, followed by Colette's constant bantering and hints to Ash of just that. They would venture to Rhodes, where Ash would teach Ulrich how to get better at Blackjack before Orin arrived and joined the party. They would all continue on to Coulter for a sleding expedition, where they met Lincoln McCormick - a deputy from Armadillo. Whilst a lot of fun, unfortunately as all events featuring Colette, Ash would be badly injured as Ulrich collided with him on the snow resulting in multiple dislocations, cracked ribs and amnesia. Ulrich felt guilty, allowing his emotions to come to a head as he reflected on the loss of a close friend (Isaac), unrequited feelings (Andy) and almost killing a well known and respected person that he was hoping to befriend (Ash). They would eventually escort Ash back to Saint Denis, where Colette would have an open conversation with Ulrich about her own troubled love life. Upon returning to Saint Denis, Ulrich would open a telegram from Andy that read: "Don't go trying to cheat me out of our hunting date". Ulrich went to bed in Saint Denis, thinking about the word "date" within the telegram, wondering if perhaps things weren't so dire.

May 25 1902
Ulrich would wake up in Saint Denis, still thinking about his last telegram from Andy. He would find Ash and Lucina in Saint Denis, Ash having recovered his memories and thankfully not holding any grudges against a still self deprecating Ulrich. Ulrich would go on a hunting trip with Ash, Lucina, Colette and a new friend named Gabriel. Luce recognised Gabriel as the guy who was abducted and tortured, detailed accounts posted on the walls of the telegram stations across the state. Ulrich liked Gabriel. Like Andy, he made Ulrich feel comfortable - he was handsome too. Ulrich got to know Gabriel fairly well during the hunting trip and when it came time for Gabriel to sleep, Ulrich escorted him back to Blackwater personally to make sure he got there safe.  Later that day Ulrich got a tour of some of Saint Denis' more exclusive buildings, as Ash has keys to all of them. He also received a key to Ash's home in Saint Denis, where he was welcome to stay if ever needed. While Ulrich was grateful, he didn't feel right accepting the offer - mailing the key back to Ash.

May 27 1902
Ulrich would go to an island with Luce, Ash, Orin and Colette - reason for going was something about going to a waterfall and picking peaches.  The trip was a wild one. Hazel and Orin both injured themselves pretty rough by jumping off the cliff into the shallow water... after picking peaches, Luce and Ash got lost together while Colette, Orin and Ulrich walked around. Colette gave Ulrich a bottle of Vodka, which turned out to be laced with some medical grade opiates. Ulrich went on a trip where he was chased by an imaginary bear, thought the ground was lava and ran through a sugarcane field where he would eventually get lost. After finding his way back to the shoreline, he would pass out. The others found him having an opiate overdose, when they discovered that the bottle had been laced. Ulrich was thankfully saved by Colette's quick thinking and medical knowledge.

Unfortunately, just as Ulrich found himself able to walk and regain his composure, Ash got attacked by wild pigs. Ulrich sent Gabriel a telegram telling him that he had a wild story to tell him the next time they see each other.

May 28 1902
After a week of run-of-the-mill shenanigans, Ulrich would find himself in New Austin with Luce and Dakotah - Colette's brother. Colette would be incredibly absent minded, as Luce and Ulrich would find themselves at a ranch in the desert with a man named Virgil. Virgil was incredibly kind, taking the time to talk to Luce and Ulrich for hours and show them his livestock. Luce punched a goat, they all lost one of the cows and Colette finally came to her senses after an hour talking to the chickens. A few hours later, they would meet up with Googles as well as a man named Henry Luchiano in Armadillo - along with his brothers Tommy and Veto. The three italians were somewhat abrasive but very entertaining to be around. Ulrich would also meet Wise Eyes and War Buffalo, before all playing dice games that resulted in Luce eating shit in a trough of water, Goggles and Henry having a fist fight and Ulrich and Luce dancing on the roof of a nearby building.

After a while they decided to go to the newly set up camp in the canyons near McFarlane's and Armadillo. When Ulrich would dismount and tie up his horse, he would see none other than Andy standing off to the side. Ulrich very quickly caught on that Colette was pulling people aside - everyone but Andy and Ulrich. Ulrich was happy to see Andy but couldn't help but feel like something was off - Colette was up to something. They all decided to participate in a hunting competition at Tall Trees. Andy and Ulrich were conveniently placed together in the competition. It was nice for Ulrich to get to spend time with Andy, but as time progressed it became increasingly clear to him that this was a set up. Andy claimed to have rushed over as he thought Colette was in danger, which saddened Ulrich. While he appreciated Colette doing her best to help him spend time with Andy, Ulrich couldn't help but think about the implications of it being forced and deceptive - did Andy really want to spend time with him or was he just sticking around to not make things awkward?

Once Ulrich had realised that the others weren't coming back and that the competition was a ruse, he confessed his feelings to Andy - which took a large weight off of his shoulders. After their 'date', Andy said he needed to get to Emerald Ranch. When Ulrich politely asked if he wanted company for the ride, Andy sternly warned Ulrich that he wasn't to follow Andy under any circumstances. Ulrich would go on to find Colette and Luce picking tobacco at Rhodes, asking Colette to kindly apologise to Andy for her devious actions. He would go to sleep that night trying to make sense of what had happened - unsure of what Andy would think of him after some time had passed.

May 30 1902
Ulrich would go on a hunting trip with Colette, Luce and Orin. Orin and Colette would disappear at some point, causing Luce and Ulrich to look for them. Ulrich would go to sell the large pelt he had on the back of his horse so that he could ride with Luce, instead of her having to walk all the way to blackwater. When he returned, Luce was missing - eventually he would find her under a tree knocked out. He rushed Luce to Blackwater, where Colette had thankfully made her way already. Ulrich would telegram Ash, feeling terrible that he had left Luce alone in a bear infested forest. Ulrich felt uncomfortable on the ride back to Saint Denis as Luce and Ash kept attributing her safety to Ulrich, implying Ulrich had somehow saved Luce. The reality was quite different. Once Ash and Luce split to go to the post office, Ulrich hastily wrote a note and stuck it to the wall outside of Ash's townhouse with an envelope full of painkillers - an apology for leaving Luce alone and instructions on how to care for her wounds. Ulrich would sleep underneath a tree in Rhodes, shortly after.

May 31 1902
Ulrich would wake up quite early, hearing from Colette that she would be picking wheat outside of Emerald. Colette and Ulrich would pick wheat together and discuss Andy. Colette would let Ulrich know that Andy thinks his crush may just be "him latching on to the first guy that makes him feel this way" but that he would "help Ulrich figure things out" and "spend more time with him". While Ulrich was happy to hear that Andy wanted to spend more time with him, the comments about "helping" him made him feel uneasy. Was Andy just going to spend time with Ulrich as some sort of social responsibility? Did he just want to introduce Ulrich to being queer and then leave when he felt Ulrich could handle it?

While Ulrich was new to relationships with men, he was not new to relationships. He was all too familiar with the feelings he had - he was confident that Andy was wrong. After all, there are other options for Ulrich. What about Gabriel? He was handsome and made Ulrich feel comfortable just like Andy. Yet Ulrich still couldn't stop thinking about Andy. It was always Andy. Ulrich pressed Colette for information about Andy's line of work, when she revealed that she believed he was in a gang of some sort. While initially surprised, Ulrich didn't mind that much. Ulrich just wanted Andy to be safe and alive and trusted him not to get himself in a situation that would end his life.

Later that day, after a brief robbery, Ulrich would organise with Andy to meet and have a chat. They met at Monto's Rest where Ulrich was chopping wood. Andy would fill Ulrich in on his past - his time in Mexico, his heroin addiction and his age. While Ulrich knew Andy was younger, Andy revealed himself to be just a little younger than even Ulrich had thought - just 19 years old. Ulrich would confront Andy about his conversation with Colette, asking Andy that if he plans on exploring anything with Ulrich for the sake of social responsibility that he would rather Andy just say he isn't interested. Ulrich would feel really good about the conversation and meet up until later in the day, when Andy would run into them all in Saint Denis. Andy, clearly troubled, would fidget and stare off at the wall anxiously. Ulrich followed him out when he went to leave, asking him if he was okay and if he wanted to talk about it. Ulrich was met with angst, as yet again, Andy would warn him sternly "not to get involved".

What was Ulrich supposed to do? One minute Andy says he wants Ulrich to be more confident - but then shuts him down the second he tries. Then he says he's an open book... just to tell Ulrich not to get involved. Why couldn't Andy just politely say "thanks for caring, but I'd rather not talk about it now". Ulrich would feel like everything changed the second he let his feelings known to Andy. Charged with emotion, Ulrich would pen a letter to Andy that he was sorry for whatever he did and that he would leave Andy alone for a while. Was this all just a big mistake? The first person to truly make Ulrich feel comfortable (aside from Luce) was now blowing up in his face every other minute just for trying to care. While Ulrich understands 'taking things slow' - surely asking someone if they want to talk about what's bothering them is well within the scope.

June 1 1902
Ulrich awoke to find a telegram from Luce - "we're in Armadillo. Come join us!". Ulrich would make his way toward Armadillo, being ambused by three wolves just outside of Strawberry. He would take all three of them with his new shotgun, but would use all the ammo in the process. Not thinking to reload with the ammo stored on Marshmallow - whom Colette had gifted to him a few days prior - which would be a problem when Marshmallow bucked Ulrich off her back, kicking him and running into the forests as a cougar came straight for him. Unfortunately, with no ammo, Ulrich was a sitting duck. He would be taken to Blackwater by a local where he would telegram Lucina for help.

After Luce, Ash, Colette, Wise Eyes and Cody would arrive, Ulrich was fixed up and they were on their way to Coulter. Everyone had an hour long migraine before Ash, Luce, Ulrich and Orin would recover - missing Wise Eyes, Hazel and Colette. They would go to Valentine, then Strawberry - where Ash's stitches had popped. Unfortunately, Mark Shephard - whom was suspected to be hired by Isaac to execute a hit on Ash, had recently put out a telegram looking to study under a doctor. Ulrich realised Mark may come by, hoping to find a doctor, so they scurried to Blackwater where they were met by deputies. Ulrich went to sleep in Blackwater, hoping Luce and Ash and the deputies would have a safe and productive meeting with Mark - that wouldn't result in anyone getting hurt.

The last thing Ulrich would do that night is sent Gabriel a telegram. With Andy's change of demeanor to Ulrich, maybe he should explore his other options.

June 3 1902
Ulrich would start his day right before the storm rolled in, opting to cut some lumber. A bunch of people would rock up on him including none other than Roach, who had previously robbed Ulrich. Thankfully Roach was true to his word and reiterated to his crew that Ulrich was a friend. After the storm Ulrich, Luce and Orin would spend a lot of the day hanging out. They would run into Orchid at Valentine in the evening and go on a trip to Emerald where they would catch up with Orchid. Ulrich would talk to Orchid about his issues with Andy, explaining that things had been less than ideal lately. Orchid would later go to sleep in the Emerald Stables as Orin, Luce and Ulrich would wait on the roof of the telegram station for Ash to arrive. Unfortunately, just as Ash arrived - Orin would lose his balance and fall off the roof in a dramatic fashion. Ulrich would be the one to finally relocate Orin's shoulder after many failed attempts from Ash and Luce, which boosted his self esteem a little. It felt like the first time he hadn't fucked someone up royally trying to fix them up.

June 4 1902
Ulrich would meet with Rush, Luce and Orin bright and early. They would all go to check out a horse in Annesberg. Just as they were about to leave, Ulrich got a telegram from none other than Andy. The telegram simply read "I'm around if you are". Ulrich was confused, he'd only just recently told Andy that he planned on leaving him alone after a string of unfortunate interactions left Ulrich feeling like Andy wasn't interested. Upon arriving in Annesberg, Andy had moved on to Emerald. Ulrich left the others to head to Emerald to see Andy. After some delay, the two got to talking before the others arrived. After the storm, Andy would accompany them on a hunting trip which ended in Strawberry. Ulrich confronted Andy about things feeling 'weird' and letting Andy know they could just forget about Ulrich's confession if things were too weird. Later, he'd pen a heartfelt letter to Andy that he neeed to know if he needed to move on or not.

Later that day, they would meet with Colette and Ash. Ash and Luce had schemed some adventure for them all to go on. The adventure was an expedition on a steam boat to an island off the coast of Rhodes. The trip was somewhat of a success, however, Colette and Orin would both be incapacitated. Colette fell hardly 6 feet off of a ledge and wasn't able to stand anymore, while Orin succumbed to a similar fate later on. Colette made Ulrich count to 10 as a chicken for entertainment while the locals came to the island to pick her up. On the trip Ulrich was able to get to talk to Ash alone for a few moments and expressed his gratefulness for Ash's friendship.

Once returned to the shore they would run into Rush again, who was just waking up. Ulrich would go to bed, leaving Ash and Luce to chat alone.

June 6 1902
Ulrich woke up to a telegram from Luce and Orin informing him that they were hanging out with Andy in Annesberg. Conflicted, Ulrich set off to Annesberg to meet them. Ulrich wasn't sure how he'd be received as he didn't have time to check his PO Box for any responses from Andy to his letter a few days ago. Not knowing how Andy would react, Ulrich cautiously joined them and to his surprise, Andy was not only seemingly 'back to himself' but also engaged in a flirty comment to Ulrich - where he said the fireplace looked even better with Ulrich standing by it. They'd have a really great chat that reminded Ulrich of the two's first chats in Valentine. After Luce tackled a local and went to nap, Ulrich would ask Andy if he had received his letter. Andy said he had responded, though Ulrich didn't really care too much. Things felt like normal again.

Andy headed up to the mine while Colette was on her way. By the time Colette had arrived and Orin had been kicked by his horse and then fixed up again, Andy was nowhere to be found - likely asleep somewhere. Ulrich would finally read the letter and reply, happy to know that Andy's "rough patch" was coming to a close and they could start being normal again. Andy finished the letter talking about his struggle for commitment in a state of constant busyness and told Ulrich to "show me what you got cowboy".

Before leaving, Ulrich would give Andy's pony "Crack" a nice pat before Luce would wake up and the four would go to Saint Denis. In Saint Denis, they all dressed up as Wizards and planned to go and terrorise people. It seems the state was mostly asleep though as they'd all find themselves in Armadillo some hours later. Orchid showed up in Armadillo looking incredibly muscly... Ulrich would think to himself "where was orchid hiding that body?". They'd eventually be joined by Dakotah, Ash and even Lincoln before they'd all go out "sledding" in the desert mountains. Ulrich was, somehow, one of the people to escape injury.  Orin, Luce, Orchid and Dakotah were all given medical attention for a myriad of injuries including sprained ankles, cuts, bruises and gashes.
